Featuring: Spalted Maple

Nature's Own Artistry

A Gabby Material Story

SCH-175506

What Is It

A Material Born, Not Made

Spalted maple begins its life the way any tree does, and then something remarkable happens. As the wood begins its natural decay, fungi move through it, leaving behind dark, winding lines and soft washes of color that no craftsman could replicate and no two boards could ever share. The result is a grain pattern that reads like a map of the forest itself, equal parts wild and refined.

We do not consider this a flaw to correct. We consider it a gift to preserve. Once the spalting reaches its most beautiful stage, the wood is carefully dried and stabilized, locking in the pattern before it can progress further, and preparing it for a long life as furniture rather than firewood.

Rare By Nature

Spalting occurs naturally and cannot be forced or guaranteed, genuinely well-spalted maple is scarce, and pieces made from it are, by definition, limited. We source it selectively, and we use it sparingly, letting the material lead the design rather than asking it to conform to one.

It is also, by nature, at home anywhere. The same organic grain that feels grounded beside a lake window feels equally at ease in a coastal sunroom or gathered at a vineyard table, because its character comes from the wood itself, not from any single setting. Each piece in this small collection is an heirloom in waiting, the kind of furniture that draws a hand across its surface and a question from a guest.

Three Pieces, Each Its Own

No two boards spalt the same way, so no two pieces in this collection are quite alike either.

Caring for your Spalted Pieces

Simple Aging

Spalted maple asks for the same gentle care as any fine hardwood. Keep it out of direct, prolonged sunlight to preserve the depth of its coloring, wipe spills promptly, and dust with a soft, dry cloth. Treated this way, it will only grow more beautiful with time, the patina of a life well furnished.
